SALAD DRESSING!!!

I found this article humorous this morning:

EPA: Salad dressing runoff floods Ohio homes

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- An Ohio EPA official says creamy ranch dressing mixed with sewage and storm runoff in the flooded basements of at least 10 Columbus homes.

Sewage from T. Marzetti Co., a Columbus-based salad dressing maker, overwhelmed the Columbus storm-sewer system during heavy rains last week. A resident reported the problem to the state's Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday.

The EPA's Michael Dalton says the agency suspects that the factory's pipes merge with nearby homes, but aren't wide enough to handle extra water during a storm.

Neighbors have complained to the EPA over the last 30 years about discharges from the city sewage line that serves Marzetti into a creek. A company representative wouldn't comment on Monday.

On a more serious note, Findlay, the town where I live, has gotten some really really negative press lately. Read here what the Washington Post had to say about us.

Of course, the next day, everyone quoted in the article took back what they said claiming they had been misquoted. I can't find an electronic version of the editorial that appeared in yesterday's Findlay paper but it was quite sad. I feel as if the Washington Post article was slightly biased (but come on people, what newspaper isn't?) however, I would say that a majority of people in this town would have responded to the writer's questions the same way if they didn't know it would become national news. People keep saying, "just because Findlay's poluation is 95% white doesn't mean were racist", or "there are so many international students at our univeristy, we're not racist". Get a clue people. I would like to know how many people in this town have ever talked to an international student.

Don't get me wrong, I'd say a lot of the little towns back around where I'm from in Indiana would beat Findlay out in a racism contest in no time. But just because you don't treat people of other races poorly doesn't mean you're off the hook. I think this town is definitely all about preserving the status quo and in doing so it doesn't extend a warm welcome to non-white people - it doesn't provide an environment in which non-white people can feel comfortable or at home. I do think that a lot of people here are resistant to change. I think this town tries really hard to mask the reality of people in need. I think a lot of people do look down on non-white folks in this town but a lot of that has to do with lack of exposure and/or experience (even in 2008).

I like Findlay though. The lack of diveristy outside of the University's campus can be strange sometimes but I always wanted to move back to this town after living here for my Jr. High days. I think there are a lot of really good people in this town who just need a bit of time to adjust to things.

And for the record, if you read the article, have you ever heard the rumor that Obama was gay? The other rumors I've heard several times but not the gay thing. I even had a student here tell me that he was the Anti-Christ.

November is going to be an interestig month my friends. And this post kind of bounces all over the place, sorry.

much love,
Carrie Jade

The Washington Post is completely left-leaning, and they just scapegoated Findlay as a redneck town. You're right, there never WAS an "Obama is gay" rumor, ever. They tossed that in to warm him up to the all the gays out there that feel persecuted. Ohio is a battleground state--someone thought this article would teach people a lesson. Mostly because Obama is not polling well among white blue-collar workers and they want to highlight the "redneck factor" as much as possible. Sorry Findlay, you had to take the fall for the greater good of the Democratic candidate.

In the interests of full disclosure, I'm a Republican--and I approve this message.
